The Harmonized System (HS) code classifies your product for customs everywhere it travels. Expodite uses it to work out which documents, certificates and controls apply to an order, and prints it on your invoices and packing lists.
What to enter
- The HS code, at least 6 digits. The first 6 digits are the same in every country.
- Your national tariff line, where you know it: Egypt and most destinations add digits after the first 6.
- A customs description: what the goods are, in words a customs officer would recognise, for example “fresh navel oranges” rather than “fruit”.
When it is required
An order cannot be approved until every line has an HS code. For shipments to or through the European Union, the goods description and a 6-digit HS code go into the pre-arrival safety filing, so Expodite also warns you when a description is too generic to be accepted.
Classification is your responsibility as the exporter. When you are unsure, check with your customs broker or the official tariff of the destination; a library suggestion is a starting point, not a ruling.
